BASIC SHIP KNOWLEDGE

Shipboard Organisation

'Organisation' means - a group  of people that perform tasks necessary for achieving results. In case of Ship, Organisation means people necessary to operate and maintain a ship.
Tasks involved in moving a ship from one port to other are:
   1) Maintain and control the direction of ships across the sea ( Navigate the ship )
   2) operation and control machinery needed to move the ship, and for different services
   3) Serve all other needs of people living on board
   4) The important needs are safety and security of personnel, cargo and the ship.

There are two Different Departments on the Ship,namely the Nautical (Deck) Department and the Engine Department.

Nautical Department is responsible for cargo operations, navigation of the vessel, general maintenance of the ship, and the administration.

The engineering department is responsible for up-keeping and maintenance of all machinery on the ship, and the propulsion system.

Each departments consists of officers and ratings.

Nautical Department consists of Master, Chief Officer, 2nd Officer, 3rd Officer, Cadet or Apprentices and Able Seafarers (Deck), Watch-keeping, Deck Ratings or GP Ratings.

Engine Department consists of Chief Engineer, 2nd Engineer, 3rd Engineer, 4th Engineer, Electro-Technical Officers, Electrical Officers, Electro-Technical Rating, Electrician or Fitter and Able Seafarers (Engine), Watch-keeping,Engine Ratings or GP Ratings.
Master is overall in charge of ship.
Catering Department includes Catering officer, Chief Cook & General Steward (G S) who are responsible for cooking food for Officers and Crew and general cleanliness in accommodation.
